Kaga Goto Five Shishi Kozuka

 

Shishi (lion-dog) are one of the animals in the Japanese Zodiac.  They celebrate the dog, which is typically found in the asian zodiac.  Shishi are a favored theme among Daimyo.  They are commonly seen with dragons, their opposite, in the zodiac.  We see this opposing-balancing theme often in Japanese art.

 

A fine kozuka depicting 5 Shishi.  The primary material is shakudo with alternating Shishi in gold.   The nanako is ultra fine, giving it a silk like texture.  The workmanship, takabori iroe, demonstrates the superior skill associated with the Goto School.

This kozuka can stand on it’s own in any kodogu collection.
