A beautiful woodblock print by the famous Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Hiroshige is considered one of the great print masters in Japan. Woodblock prints give us a glimpse into Japanese culture in history. They show the values and social code people of the day lived by. They were entertainment. They were used to document real events.. They also helped us visualize and perhaps embellish events in history and folklore alike. Hiroshige was famous for capturing Japanese culture in an iconic way.
This print depicts a woman, probably a Geisha, dressing in her kimono. The color contract is striking, just like the Geisha. This print was chosen by the Bonham’s print expert as the header for the auction lot. It was also authenticated by the curator of the Morikami Museum and is described as a first edition in excellent original condition. Note: small crease in botton left corner.
