Large NBTHK Goto Shishi Menuki

Shishi (lion-dog) are one of the animals in the Japanese Zodiac.  They celebrate the dog, which is typically found in the asian zodiac.  Shishi are a favored theme among Daimyo.  They are commonly seen with dragons, their opposite in the zodiac.  We see this opposing-balancing theme often in Japanese art.

This particular set is exceptional.  The menuki are larger than typical.  They are made of fine shakudo and display excellent workmanship.  As a result, the NBTHK has judged these menuki to be Goto School and awarded them with Tokubetsu Hozon museum papers in 2022 shinsa.  They come mounted in a moulded kiriwood box.  Investment grade, Should not be mounted.
